Departure Control

BermudAir launches and grows with Ink

How BermudAir went from concept to commercial operations in eight months, built a full departure control stack and expanded to 10+ North American routes using Ink’s passenger handling solutions.

Bermuda's airline, built from scratch

BermudAir is Bermuda's first locally established airline and its flag carrier, operating from L.F. Wade International Airport. Launched on 1 September 2023, the airline connects Bermuda with cities across the US East Coast and Canada, serving both leisure and business travellers year-round. With a 2-2 seat configuration, no middle seats, and complimentary service in all cabins, BermudAir was designed from the outset to offer a materially different product from the carriers it competes with.

Challenge

Launching an airline from a remote island at speed

Starting an airline is a process measured in years. BermudAir's target was months. Obtaining an Air Operator Certificate, securing US DOT approval, configuring departure control across multiple airports, achieving TSA Pre-Approval — all of it had to happen in parallel, on a tight timeline, from an island in the middle of the Atlantic.

There was no legacy infrastructure to build on. Every system, process, and partner had to be selected and deployed from scratch. The risk of choosing the wrong technology stack was significant — a slow or inflexible system would constrain the airline before it had flown a single passenger.

Implementation

BermudAir selected Ink as its departure control partner for launch. The stack — Ink DCS and Ink Load Control — runs on both desktop and mobile, covering check-in, boarding, baggage handling, and weight and balance across all stations.

The mobile capability was also critical. Operating from smaller, slot-controlled airports, including Westchester County and, later in 2026, LaGuardia's Marine Air Terminal, BermudAir's teams use handheld devices with portable Bluetooth printers to complete check-in, document verification, bag tagging, and boarding wherever needed without fixed counters or self-service kiosks.

At LaGuardia, where terminal capacity is constrained and turnaround times are tight, agents process passengers in the queue before they reach the counter. APIS capture and Timatic checks are built into the mobile workflow. Additional service points can be opened in minutes during peak periods and redeployed to gates for boarding.

Ink was also part of the team that helped BermudAir achieve TSA Pre-Approval completed in record time for a new carrier.

Results

  • AOC obtained and commercial operations launched within eight months of founding
  • TSA Pre-Approval secured in record time for a new-entrant carrier
  • Mobile-enabled operation running across all stations without fixed infrastructure dependency

Impact

Speed matters for tight turnaround. Mobile operations from Ink make it realistic.

Customer voice

"Our team went through a process of looking at potential partners. Many people told us it would be impossible — you're never going to get your AOC that quickly, you're never going to get your systems set up. But our partners, including Ink, came together and moved at what felt like lightning speed. Some of our team already had experience with Ink from setting up other airlines. It became clear they were the best choice, not just for the launch but also for our long-term growth." — Adam Scott, Founder & CEO, BermudAir.

What's next

BermudAir is adding frequencies on established routes and opening new markets across the US and Canada, with transatlantic operations a stated long-term ambition. In December 2025, the airline launched AnguillAir, seasonal service from Anguilla to Baltimore, Boston, and Newark, using the same operational model.

With four aircraft now in the fleet and the Ink stack already running across all stations, the focus is on adding routes without adding operational complexity. The mobile-first model that made a rapid launch possible is the same model the airline is scaling on.
