AI is moving quickly across aviation, but the harder question is not where it can be used. It is where it creates enough value to justify the investment.

In her article for World Aviation Festival, Oana Savu, Ink's Chief Growth Officer, argues that airlines should start with the problem rather than the technology. High-volume, repetitive processes may offer more value than technically impressive use cases with limited operational impact.

She also looks at what happens beyond the pilot. Model accuracy alone is not enough. Airlines need to ask whether people are using the capability, whether behaviour is changing and whether the outcome is actually improving.

The key points:

  • AI should compete for investment on the same basis as other priorities.
  • The strongest use cases solve meaningful operational, commercial or customer problems.
  • Automating an existing process does not necessarily make that process better.
  • Human roles will shift towards exceptions, judgement and situations where interaction matters.
  • Scaling should depend on visible outcomes, not simply technical performance.
  • Success should be defined in terms of what changed for the airline, employee or traveller.
