Load Control

Nauru Airlines digitises load control operations

How Nauru Airlines replaced paper-based load control with a fully digital operation, cutting turnaround times, reducing errors, and keeping communities connected across one of the world's most complex regions to operate in.

The airline that keeps the Pacific moving

Nauru Airlines is the national carrier of the Republic of Nauru. Passenger, cargo, and ACMI operations across the Pacific, connecting island communities across Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, and the Solomon Islands. Many destinations receive one flight a week. Every flight is essential.

Challenge

When paper-based load control isn't just slow — it's a safety risk

Multi-sector flights spanning five countries, managed on paper. Weight and balance calculations done manually — slow, error-prone, and impossible to share across stations in real time. With flights carrying up to 60 passengers and nearly 300 bags on a single service, and charter schedules changing at short notice, the manual process was a bottleneck on every departure.

Implementation

Nauru Airlines adopted Ink's Departure Control System (DCS) in 2009. Load Control followed, integrated directly with DCS to automate passenger, baggage, and cargo data across the full departure workflow.

Configured to Nauru Airlines' 737 fleet specifications, including upper and lower deck weight limitations and centre of gravity parameters. Cloud-based, accessible on desktop and tablet, operating across all stations simultaneously, including outstations with limited connectivity.

Results

  • Manual trim sheet calculations eliminated across all departures
  • Built-in warnings actively reduce check-in errors and compliance risk
  • Charter schedules created and managed on the fly, within the same system
  • On-time departure performance directly supported by faster ground processing

Customer voice

"It enables us to quickly produce a load sheet within 10 minutes. And as soon as check-in closes, all the passenger, baggage, and cargo data is there — ready to go." — Godwyn Debao, Ground Operations Manager, Nauru Airlines

What's next

Nauru Airlines is working towards full cargo integration with Load Control, digital check-in across all outstations, and off-airport check-in for charter and event operations.

Thomas Bennett, Head of Ground Operations: "The biggest opportunity in digital transformation is off-airport check-in. We do a lot of charters and conferences, and having the ability to check in at hotels or venues makes for a much more convenient experience. A digital boarding pass, baggage tracking — that's where the future is."
